ABOUT BILL ALLSOPP
I have been involved in photography for most of my life; I have been, and still am, passionate about photography. First and foremost I am a landscape photographer but I also enjoy making photographs of flowers, plants and anything that appeals to me.
My first camera was a box camera, which I was given when I was about 5 years old. I progressed through various film cameras, both 35mm and medium format and finally went digital in 2002. I was never entirely happy in the wet darkroom and always preferred to be outside but I now enjoy digital development of my pictures almost as much as being out with the camera.
To me photography is about the image, what equipment you use is secondary, and to this end I have exchanged my DSLR and myriad lenses for a Leica M9 and three primes lenses. Now I travel light and spend far less time fiddling with the equipment and more seeking out the subject and the way to interpret that and to convey what I see and feel. As you will see from my website, landscape photography is a major feature of my personal work these days, alongside my interest in monochrome. I give occasional talks to photographic societies on digital monochrome.
My pictures have been published by magazines, used for advertising, on greetings/birthday cards and on the internet. You can buy prints or acquire a licence for advertising, editorial or other use. I am also available to produce commissioned work.
In my photographs I seek to present my own interpretation of my subject and to maximise the impact of the beautiful landscape rather than simply record what is in front of me. “Bad” weather adds mood to most scenes, I like stormy and wet conditions, providing I can stop my equipment getting wet. Many of the pictures on my web-sites were made with a full frame Canon DSLR but now I use only Leica.
DIGITAL MONOCHROME
It is many years since I made my first monochrome image with a box camera and for some years I have specialised in making digital monochrome images. Over this time I have experimented with many different techniques, tried lots of software and plug-ins in a constant search to improve. Whilst doing this I have made many notes, some of which are repeated on this site with a view to helping others. I also give talks to local photographic societies on the subject.
