Lee Filters - 100mm or Seven5 on the Fuji X

I am currently running Fuji X cameras alongside a Canon 5D Mk3 although I suspect this will not last for long, I feel so much more comfortable with the X-T1 and X-Pro2 and the lesser weight of the Fuji X system suits me too.
With the Canon I needed the 100mm Lee Filter System but I experimented with the Seven5 on the Fuji X cameras.

Just back from a fantastic day at the Photography Show at the NEC. After a very quick wander round a few stands I went to the Toute Suite for Carlie Waite’s talk which was very interesting and then onto the Fuji X Stand where Ben Cherry was assisting, I tried out both the X-Pro 2 and the new 100-400 lens. Impressive? Yes just awesome.

Wandering in the Mist

Yesterday saw a fine morning mist and, as almost always, it called me to go out and see who else was there and what was happening. Often there are giants or fairies at play - safe in the knowledge that humans will not see them and there are ghosts that invade the mind and make all seem magical. So it was I set out with hope to meet new friends and old, see new vistas and shapes both friendly and foreboding.
As usual the Fuji X-T1 performed flawlessly.

"Stand and Point."

"Island of the mind."

Had a fab' day In Derbyshire yesterday with the Fuji X-T1 shooting stock images around Hathersage and Mam Tor. The little Fuji is so easy to carry yet so good to use. Weather was great too, not the endless grey we seem to have been palgued with but a steady flow of changeable conditions making for great light and atmosphere. Images all captioned and keyworded ready to upload this morning; now I can't wait to get out again!

On Tuesday I visited Stratford Photographic Group to give my talk "British Landscapes in Colour and Mono." I found them to be a very friendly club with some excellent photographers in their number. It's always a slightly daunting thing to give a talk when a club has such a good reputation and the thoughts that run through my mind include; "Will they enjoy my images," "Am I helping to pass on the knowledge I have gained over my years of photography"
Well it seems on this occasion I need not have worried as the next day I received this email.
Hello Bill,
As I drove home last, I thought I must send you a note of thanks.........

The long dark nights, the dark wet days, the constant grey skies; it builds and depresses. Only one thing can clear it; I have give myself a good talking to and get out and take photos. There is no such thing as the bad light; only a bad mindset.
So on Saturday morning I got up 90 minutes before dawn, got dressed, had a cup of tea and set off to Swithland Reservoir to take a picture or two. I had something in mind but a landscape photographer has to be flexible and adapt to the situation. The water level was the lowest I have seen at this time of year and acres of mud was not what I had envisaged. The forecast said that we should expect a bald blue sky so I had to move on quickly and sort out a new location. A couple of possibles were checked out and again I had to move on.....

We are pleased to tell you that one of your images has been commended by the judges and has won a place in the Awards book and will at the London exhibition."

Work and other things have kept me from doing what I like best, going out with my camera and making pictures; but earlier in the week, while walking the dog, I spotted some thistle heads going to seed and thought how lovely they looked so yesterday I went back, armed with my Canon 5DMk3 and a 180mm macro lens

I am not sure why I even entered the competition this year. Perhaps I was spurred on and encouraged by the progress I have been lucky enough to make after the health problems of the last year. Anyway for whatever reason I entered and am delighted to have had two images shortlisted.
The competition rules prevent me showing you the images.

Delighted to see another of my pictures gracing a magazine cover, this time the July 2015 edition of Sussex Life.
This image was taken when I was using a Leica M9 and is from a series of images along the south coast of Britain when I travelled from Selsey Bill to Dungeness. This was a most productive and enjoyable trip in fine weather.

Making and using a flare dodger

Shooting into the light adds drama to an image but often causes flare. A flare dodger is a simple to make and use tool which can cancel out the effects of flare but you do have to make two exposures.
I have two dodgers, one made from a cut down tea-spoon and the other from a length of wire and some Shumi.

An Outdoor Photographers Mental checklist - WAIST FAFF

06th June 2015 - 0 comments
One of the most important things for a photographer to learn is to make a mental checklist of the things to do before each shot AND to run through that checklist before each shot. No one is perfect, I still slip up sometimes, the light is changing, the moment is fleeting and for whatever reason the shot is rushed. It perhaps looks OK on the camera screen at the time but you get home, view it full size and “oh the disappointment!”

I like a drop of Scotch and will readily acknowledge that the main ingredient is water so having just returned from Scotland can confirm that supplies of the amber liquid should continue unchecked for the foreseeable future. Whether they really need quite as much as we saw is another thing.
