After the death of our Airedale and dalmatian we vowed not to have another dog; the very next day after the Dalmatian died our neighbour's cat moved itself in and refused to go home.
When Skippy died the house felt empty so despite our previous resolve we decided to provide a home for a rescue dog. Friends had had a Greyhound and we felt the breed suited and the terrible fate that befalls many ex-racers meant it was very worthwhile to provide a loving home for one. East Midlands Dog Rescue specialise in the breed and rescue many dogs from death row and uncaring owners and trainers; the treatment of these lovely animals is appalling, shot, deliberately injured so the vet will pit them down, etc. etc. The dog racing industry needs much more serious regulation in this respect.
Misty was being looked after by John and Pat who help EMDR, their kennels is more like a class hotel with centrally heated, tiled accommodation where each dog has a comfy armchair or sofa! We took to her immediately. She is an ex Irish / UK racer with some wins to her credit but a racing dogs competition life is short and at four years old she was retired. After checking out our home EMDR delivered the dog on loan to see how we got on and within a week we had completed the adoption process. She has had only one small accident in the house in a week and is no bother at all, Greyhounds are very relaxed couch potatoes that need only a short walk twice a day and are ideally suited to families and older people, but bear in mind they are sight hounds bred to chase small furry animals so small dogs, cats etc may be at risk. Take them out on a lead and fit a muzzle to save any grief.
